Sometimes The Cop Is An Asshole; Sometimes It's You

I will concede that there are many cases where cops are assholes and they do abuse their power and authority by harrassing law-abiding citizens for nothing more than looking suspicious or their own amusement. Those types of cops are deplorable in that they give a bad reputation to the actual good, dedicated, and honorable police officers out there. There are plenty of good, honest police out there too who receive an unfair prejudice because their reputation as public servants has been tarnished by the dishonest ones. I think the thing you have to keep in mind is that police officers are human beings, too. They are subject to the same circumstances and temptations as any one of us would be if placed under that much authority. Some handle it well and some handle it not as well, but you shouldn't pass judgment on the person until he reveals his character.

I'm not going to discuss separating the bad cops from the good today, though. The point of this writing is that I am fed up with people blaming the police who catch them in the act of blatantly diregarding the law. Like one man I talked to the other day who claimed that the state police were all assholes. Why were they all assholes? Because one of them gave him a ticket. Okay, so what was the ticket for? Going 80 in a 65 zone. He didn't deny that he was going 15 MPH over the speed limit, but he was certain as fuck he didn't deserve a ticket for it.

I was dumbfounded. I kept hoping the other guy with me would say something so I wouldn't have to because I would have surely offended the gentleman by saying something to the affect of "So the cop is an asshole for punishing you for breaking the law!!" What is this world coming to when a guy who's at least fifty years old has so little personal responsibility that he feels justified in blaming the police for punishing him for making the choice to do something wrong. Sorry, you weighed the consequences, and you made the choice to break the law yourself. You deserve whatever within reason that you get, and you only have yourself to blame. Learn some personal accountability, because it's sad when someone half your age has lost all respect for you as a mature and responsible human being.
